Old videotapes may need reconditioning before they can be transferred. This is a precise heating and drying process for sticky audio and video magnetic tapes (common phenomenon of hydrolysis) which can be made readable again by the application of a process called "baking". The strips are thus placed in an oven where the temperature and humidity are closely controlled during this process which can take between 10 to 12 hours.
Production MD is equipped with this reconditioning device which completes its digital transfer arsenal.
You can consult the content of your cassettes on our premises before having them transferred at the rate of $1.50/min |
---|
For old tapes, a thermal reconditioning fee (restoration of cassettes/reels) and/or cleaning fee (cassettes that ink the heads of our devices) may be applied. |

About the digital archiving of cassettes
Most archives, libraries and heritage institutions have VHS video tapes in their collections. These tapes are often the primary video format found in these institutions, as they were previously a cost-effective and easy-to-use video recording technique.
Unfortunately, as with other types of magnetic tapes, the preservation of VHS tapes presents significant challenges: the tapes have a limited lifespan and eventually degrade; the technology for reading these tapes and the expertise needed to repair the readers are disappearing.
In order for VHS-recorded information to remain accessible, it must be transferred to a new technology. This Technical Bulletin contains information and procedures for scanning VHS video tapes. It is aimed at small and medium-sized heritage institutions that lack the funds to carry out professional digitization.
